A newsletter for alumni and their families, designed to keep you connected with Carroll and its dynamic alumni community.
Welcome to the Carroll Alumni Connect. Our goal is to provide interesting content, inspiration, opportunities for connection, with a bit of nostalgia and fun. If you have ideas on how to help us achieve this, or are interested in contributing an article, please email Mary McNulty.

Alums Sightings on Campus
Michael Finn-Henry '14
Michael recently stopped by for a visit, and the fact that he's a retired world class speed climber (was ranked 9th in the world) gave us an idea: what if we had Michael teach Head of School Renée Greenfield how to climb the wall? Renée, who has a less than comfortable relationship with heights, was game. In fact, it was actually her idea!
Check out Renée’s first hand account of her climb on LinkedIn.
Andrew Gray '73
Andrew Gray '73 made a trip back to campus this fall joined by his wife Yuki and daughter Marie, both of whom were visiting Carroll for the first time. The visit began at the Wayland campus where Andrew was able to sign the Legacy Book. From there, they returned to Lincoln which was the only campus when Andrew was at Carroll, the "first school where he truly felt happy." Never short on stories from when he was a student wandering the halls of Storrow, he was able to share some highlights with a few teachers and students he encountered on their journey. They finished their tour in what is now the Arts & Innovation Center in the Gatehouse building with a quick tour of the Fab Lab with Josh Mulready and Pete Maiurano.
Alvie Stoddard '13
Alvie was recently back in the Northeast visiting family and friends. We were thrilled to hear from Alvie about his desire to visit Carroll. Alvie, a Technology Risk Consultant in San Francisco, took a break from working remotely and stopped by our Wayland campus for a tour. During his visit, Alvie talked fondly about his Carroll experience and was truly excited to see the newest campus. Alvie chatted with staff and faculty, and signed the Legacy Book.
Eline Laurent '14
Eline planned to meet up with Mary McNulty during Fall Festival to discuss some alumni volunteer opportunities. Can you think of a better time to stop by for a visit to Carroll? Eline and Mary walked through campus, chatting with teachers, and soaking in the festive energy. She didn’t toss any chickens, but she did make some pickles!
Carroll's First Annual Legacy Event
A little rain (well, actually a lot of rain) didn't dampen the spirits of those who attended the Legacy Event this past June! We were thrilled to have so many alumni join us and make this event so special. Over a lovely breakfast under the big tent, we heard from Head of School Renée Greenfield about the reasons why it's great to be a Carroll alum. We also heard from Greg O'Brien '99 who inspired our newest graduates with stories about his post Carroll journey and continued connection to the school. And of course, alums had so much fun connecting with one another, and with Carroll faculty.
We hope you’ll join us on June 8, 2025 for this year’s event!
At the event, we were honored to present the 2024 Alumni Awards. Congratulations to the recipients!
Service to Carroll School Award: Greg O’Brien ‘99 and Roy Dow ‘99
Thinking Differently Award: Jessie Piltch-Loeb ‘11
Alumni Achievement Award: David Arrow ‘79
Making Connections

Carroll Connections: Lasting Connections
We’ve heard that Carroll connections run deep and are long lasting. Share your Carroll connection story to Mary McNulty at mmcnulty@carrollschool.org. Send pictures too! We want to hear about:
- Random Carroll run ins - did you meet a fellow alum unexpectedly?
- Still hang out with Carroll buddies - send us your stories and pictures!
Nathaniel Smith and Makayla Carrafiello, both 2017 graduates of Carroll, have kept in touch. After both attending Landmark, Nathaniel went on to American University and McKayla is at Roger Williams University. Last spring they both decided to study abroad, though they were unaware of each other’s plans until a few weeks before arriving in Australia. Makayla was heading to James Cook University to study marine biology. Nathaniel was heading to the University of Queensland in Brisbane taking courses toward his double major in history and secondary education with a minor in literature. During their mid-semester break, they took advantage of their close proximity and planned a trip to Melbourne to catch up and travel around. They visited The 12 Apostles, a collection of limestone stacks off the shore of Port Campbell National Park (pictured).
Alumnus Roy Dow '99 is the head coach of the Boys Newton North Soccer team which just won the Massachusetts Division I State Title in record fashion, as the 31st seed. Biggest upset in HS soccer in recent history. Don’t wait for the movie, read more about this comeback story here. Wow - Congratulations to Roy and his team!
At the Sandwich Fair a few weeks ago, Allison West (Middle School Division Head) ran into alumnus Sky Rainier '20 & mom Chanda Butler-Rainier. Sky is a freshman at Olin for engineering. He is currently working on an AI app with speech-to-text capability, and he hopes to partner with Carroll to test it out in the future soon.
Alumni Plaques
In the last edition we asked what was different about the top picture.
The answer: The map and the plaques are missing!
As far as the map goes, it fell victim to a paint refresh of the gym. If you know your capitals, it may be in part because of that gym wall!
And the plaques….Scott Burke, Carroll’s former woodshop teacher, started the tradition of creating the wooden plaques in the late 80s early 90s so that students could leave a little remembrance of themselves. And, the plaques aren’t actually missing. Simple math will tell you that at some point there is no longer room to keep all the plaques hanging. So, going forward, plaques will be displayed for four years, after which you can reclaim your plaque as a keepsake.

Head of School Blog
Head of School Dr. Renée Greenfield shares her thoughts on a variety of topics in the Carroll Head of School blog. Here are a few we thought might be of interest.
Giving Back: Carroll Alumni Who Returned as Educators
Currently, six of Carroll’s full-time educators and nearly 25 summer counselors are also Carroll alum. Years ago, these individuals sat in some of the very same classrooms in which they now teach. Their decision to return reflects their enormous commitment to Carroll and enriches our community deeply.
Growth Spurt: Alum Shea Booth '20
Four years after graduating from Carroll, Shea Booth ’20 — who attended the Upper School from mid-8th grade through 9th grade — and his mom, Dr. Mary Kate McGowan, reflect on his short but transformative time at the school.
