Dates: June 23-August 1, 2025
Trainees will teach reading and spelling skills using the Orton-Gillingham approach, a structured alphabetic-phonetic system that employs visual, auditory, tactile, and kinesthetic pathways to learning. Reading and spelling are treated as interacting disciplines. Using the Orton-Gillingham approach, trainees will learn to individualize instruction to meet the needs of each student.
This intensive six-week course is designed for teachers. Trainees will meet daily from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm for introductory seminars in late June. After the first five days of seminars, trainees will begin daily, individualized tutoring sessions with students. Throughout the course, trainees will attend coursework seminars four afternoons each week.
The Summer Course provides 70 hours of coursework and approximately 66 hours of supervised practicum. This is part of an Associate Level course through the Academy of Orton Gillingham. The second part of the course, practicum and observations will occur over the following school year for an additional fee. Upon completion of both, you will have approximately 80 hours of coursework and over 100 Orton-Gillingham lessons. This meets the Orton-Gillingham Academy Associate Level training requirements. The practicum and observations can be completed at a site other than Carroll School.
Summer Course Fee: $3,500
Additional Practicum/Coursework: $650
