High School Readiness (Grades 8-9)
Our High School Readiness (HSR) program is for bright children entering 8th and 9th grade who have language-based learning differences (LBLDs) and/or executive function challenges affecting their academic performance.
Supportive, small classes are designed to address both the academic and social needs of young adolescents. Students develop reading fluency skills, note-taking strategies, collaboration and leadership skills, and the analytical and organizational frameworks needed to write research papers.

Typical Day in Summer Grades 8-9
Written Expression Class
Students work in small class groups with an educator and teaching assistant to strengthen writing skills. Using the Six-Trait writing process, students work on a written research project that is presented at the end of summer school.
Active Reading Skills Class
In small groups, students work with an educator to gain the necessary reading skills to tackle the volume of reading they'll face in high school. Using non-fiction text and/or short stories, students learn active reading strategies, such as: highlighting, annotating, note-taking, and discussion.
Math Class
In small groups with lots of individualized attention, educators review concepts and strengthen skills in pre-algebra and algebra. Math educators design curriculum specifically for each group following the Massachusetts Curriculum Framework for math so that skills taught will help prepare students for the expectations in high school.
Targeted Cognitive Intervention (TCI)
Each day includes a class that strengthens the brain to help students become faster and more efficient learners. Children work on a set of activities designed for their specific weakness (reaction time, working memory, executive function, or processing speed). Throughout the summer, students will reflect on their work and set individual goals.
Summer Fun Activities
Students enjoy afternoons filled with on-campus summer fun, with activities designed to challenge campers physically and mentally, to build self-confidence and self-reliance, and to bolster self-esteem. Activities may include outdoor education, games, challenges, physical activities, creative arts, and more.
Our daughter has attended Summer at Carroll for several years now. She looks forward to it all year long. The program allows her to avoid academic regression while exposing her to students who are just like her.Summer@Carroll Parent
