Elementary School (Grades 3-4)
Our Elementary School summer program is for bright children entering grades 3-4 who struggle with reading and other language-based skills. Most have been formally diagnosed with a specific learning disability (SLD) in reading or a language-based learning difference (LBLD), such as dyslexia.
In the morning, students engage in an Orton-Gillingham focus area class along with small classes in math and writing. Students build confidence, enhance their abilities, and improve efficiency by learning appropriate strategies and reinforcing previously taught skills. In the afternoon, children enjoy fun summer activities aimed to get kids moving, build self-esteem, and nurture friendships.

Typical Day in Summer Grades 3-4
Orton-Gillingham Focus Area
Working with an Orton-Gillingham trained educator, children work on decoding (reading) and encoding (spelling) skills, fluency, and comprehension.
Writing Class
Children are thoughtfully grouped into small classes with an educator and teaching assistant to strengthen written language skills. Children learn to use graphic organizers, transitional words and phrases, grammar, and editing, through journaling, creative writing, and formal written pieces.
Math Class
Using a multi-sensory approach, educators use math games and cognitive activities to review and strengthen math skills. Math educators design curriculum specifically for each group following the Massachusetts Curriculum Framework so that skills taught during the school year are reinforced.
Activity Class
Each day includes a class that enhances the dyslexic strengths of children, such as science, art, or gym games.
Summer Fun Activities
Children enjoy afternoons filled with on-campus summer fun, with activities designed to get kids moving, build self-esteem, and nurture friendships. Activities include games, arts & crafts, water play, and more.
Our daughter attended Summer@Carroll last year and she loved it! Her work during the summer helped her to feel prepared and more confident coming into the school year. She learned new Orton-Gillingham skills that reinforced what she had learned during the school year. Attending for another summer will continue to build her confidence as well as strengthen her reading skills.Summer@Carroll Parent
