The Garside Institute for Teacher Training (GIFTT)

Training educators in Orton-Gillingham since 1975.

The Garside Institute for Teacher Training (GIFTT) at Carroll School was established to provide comprehensive in person Orton-Gillingham training and certification through coursework and practicum. Our mission is to educate professionals and to give them the skills to teach students who have language-based learning difficulties.

O-G Courses

Our Orton-Gillingham courses are nationally accredited by the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators (AOGPE) and The International Dyslexia Assocation (IDA). Carroll School’s teacher training is aligned with the content of IDA’s Knowledge and Practice Standards.

As a middle school reading specialist in Boston Public Schools, taking the summer OG course at GIFTT was one of the best professional development experiences I’ve ever had. Working in a cohort of other educators and with multiple experienced instructors was a highly effective way to learn the Orton-Gillingham approach to teaching. Unlike many similar reading trainings, at GIFTT we actually had time to implement and receive live coaching on our instruction as tutors in the Carroll School summer program. The Garside Readers

Six timeless fables have been adapted for beginning readers by a renowned educator, in phonetically controlled but enticing natural language in “The Garside Readers” by Alice H. Garside. Readers who understand the effect of “silent e” are ready to begin. Recognizing that visualization is important to comprehension, each page of the text provides space for students to illustrate their own books!

Each set includes:

  • The Dog and the Bone
  • The Fox and the Thrush
  • The Dog and the Wolf
  • The Ant and the Duck
  • The Fox and the Stork

Price per set is $21, plus 6.25% MA sales tax

Orton-Gillingham Spelling Handbook

Spelling words are organized by difficulty starting with simple closed syllables and progressing to words with prefixes and suffixes. The handbook follows Carroll School's spelling progression and includes words that require a generalization or rule for adding a suffix to a base word. It is useful for developing lists of suitable words for spelling and dictation.
