Master's Degree of Education
Training future educators through our unique graduate studies program and hands-on residency.
Aspire. Inquire. Desire. Acquire.
A collaboration among Carroll School, Lesley University and Buckingham Browne & Nichols School (BB&N), The Angela Wilkins Program of Graduate Studies in Education is two dynamic programs each leading to a full Massachusetts initial license and a Master’s degree in Education: Moderate Disabilities - Pre-K - Grade 8 and Moderate Disabilities - Grades 5 - 12.
These intensive 12-month residency programs start in early June and end the following June. Graduate interns take courses at Carroll School and Lesley University and participate in a full-time immersive residency in classrooms at Carroll and/or BB&N. Unlike other programs, graduate interns receive nationally-accredited Orton-Gillingham training and certification, at no additional cost.
Zoe Norcross
Zoe Norcross '04 shares how her experiences as a 2004 Carroll School alumna and 2020 graduate of the Angela Wilkins Program for Graduate Studies in Education shaped her current position as a Carroll School teacher and tutor.
Our Guiding Principle
We believe that teacher trainees who are immersed in a full-time classroom experience under the guidance of a master educator are better prepared to step into their own classrooms in the future. Graduate interns experience all hands-on aspects of everyday teaching - mentor/mentee collaboration, curriculum/lesson design, teaching principles, behavior management, classroom design, parent conferences, formal and informal student assessments.
Coursework
Graduate interns take courses at Carroll and Lesley, in such topics as:
- Curriculum, Instruction & Supports
- Dyslexia and the Science of Reading: Essential Literacy for All Educators
- Culturally Responsive Pedagogies: Equity & Access
- Positive Behavior Support: Shifts in Paradigms and Practices
- Targeted Math: Access and Fluency
- Formal Assessment in Special Education
- Inclusive Education and Assistive Technologies/AAC
- And more
Compass Fellowship
In an effort to address the greatest need of each child, we recognize that diversity and inclusivity are essential to a child’s learning experience, as are effective teachers. The Fellowship is a 12-month intensive residency-based graduate program. It provides an opportunity for 2 educators from historically marginalized communities to obtain a collaborative masters degree and licensure in Moderate Disabilities PreK-8 or& 5-12 with Lesley University, including free Orton-Gillingham training and certification. In addition to fellowship monies, both fellows receive a living stipend.
As a graduate intern at Carroll, I was surrounded by the most knowledgeable teaching professionals I’ve ever worked with. Not only are they experts in the courses they teach, but the teachers also have a unique understanding about how different brains learn. I grew so much as a teacher. Kevin Tierney Graduate
