At Carroll, Gec Washman is every boy, every girl, every woman, and every man. Gec is simply a loose acronym for “Give Each Child What She or He Most Needs.” Gec is a hero who has defined what our job is at Carroll. We believe that our responsibility is to understand what each child most needs and then to deliver education accordingly.
This installment “The Life and Times of Gec Washman” focuses solely on how a school can consistently deliver what each child most needs through its teachers.
Gec Washman relies on the skill set of the teacher and tutors. If they aren’t skilled enough to deliver what each child most needs, then the entire premise of Carroll falls apart.
On Friday, October 16, our new-to-Carroll teachers and tutors - many with years of teaching experience elsewhere - spent the day as learners. They learned (and relearned) about the teaching principles of Orton-Gillingham (structured, sequential, multisensory, cognitive, diagnostic, prescriptive) and about research on designing effective lessons. Two of the participatory activities asked the new faculty members to create headlines and to offer tweets that summarized what they learned during this professional development workshop. Gec is happy!
Below is what Gec Washman’s new recruits offered.
