TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, AND DESIGN PROGRAM 2010:
June 29 - July 30  (No camp, July 5)

Technology, Engineering and Design Program:
Students entering Grades 4-7
Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Program Overview:

The Technology, Engineering and Design (TED) camp is an enrichment program designed to give children, who are entering grades 4-7, exposure to 21st Century skills. TED allows campers to learn through fun, hands-on, collaborative technology and engineering projects. The curriculum is designed to inspire campers to create and innovate, and provides a balance between direct instruction and discovery learning. TED will also give campers the opportunity to develop important social skills through group work. Additionally, there will be a daily exercise component along with the opportunity to join Summer@Carroll for field trips such as canoeing, swimming at Walden Pond and blueberry picking.

The program has three main goals:

  • Fostering creativity, innovation, design skills, and problem solving through engaging, hands-on projects;
  • Allowing each child to achieve at his or her own level;
  • Providing students with guided exercise and social opportunities.

Campers will work individually and in groups on three types of projects that are specifically designed to engage campers at their individual levels and foster a love of learning and innovation. Three types of projects will be introduced:

  1. Computer Programming (i.e. create your own computer game)
  2. Robotics (i.e. build and program a robot to navigate an obstacle course)
  3. Engineering (i.e. build a balsa wood bridge that can hold the most weight)

Project Overview:

Computer Programming - Make Your Own Computer Game
Campers will learn the basics of computer programming using Scratch, a powerful kids' programming language developed at MIT Media Labs. They will design and program their own computer games such as: pong, snake, a maze game, a space game, virtual pets, etc. The possibilities are endless! As campers advance they will be able to use a Pico Board to design games that interact with the physical world such as: fencing, bop a mole, etc.

Robotics - Make Your Own Robot
Campers will use the Lego WeDo (with Scratch) and Lego Mindstorms NXT to build and program their own robots. Projects will challenge campers to come up with creative solutions to difficult problems. Projects will include: a security robot, an obstacle course for robot navigation, robot soccer, etc.

Engineering Component – Balsa Wood Bridges and Solar Car Races
The engineering component focuses on hands-on building and design projects. Campers will design and build balsa wood bridges that will handle weight-bearing challenges. They will also design, build and race miniature solar cars.

All skill levels accepted! No prior experience is required.
