This speaker series is specifically designed for parents who have students enrolled in Summer@Carroll. The weekly presentations follow the drop-off of students at 8:30. There is a charge of $10.00 per person for each presentation, with all funds benefiting the Summer@Carroll Scholarship Fund. This presentation provides an overview of the characteristics of the Orton-Gillingham approach. The presenter will describe each of these characteristics and how it relates to reading and spelling instruction. Specific strategies will be discussed and suggestions will be given to help parents support their students outside of the classroom.

This presentation will review some of the difficulties our students face with respect to written output. We will explore the ways in which direct, explicit multi-sensory instruction can be instrumental in helping students develop effective strategies and skills for improving their writing.

Wednesday, July 21:CarrollMath! And Cognitive Development
This presentation will briefly look at the spectrum of mathematics being taught today and the methods which are used at The Carroll School. We will also discuss software, fluency, the use of a calculator, and some cognitive activities to help your child develop stronger logical thinking skills.

Wednesday, July 28:Building Better Brains for Reading
An incredible flow of research on the human brain is helping us understand how best to help children with language learning difficulties. This presentation is designed to help make some of this research understandable for parents. The brain research can help parents make more informed decisions about the types of programs and instruction that are more likely to be effective with their children.
