This program is for students preparing to move on to high school. It addresses the academic and social needs of young adolescents, including research and organizational skills, group interaction skills, and individual leadership. Students learn these skills and strategies through classroom work, special interest afternoon activities, and off-site field trips. This program emphasizes learning in a group setting as preparation for high school academics, with an emphasis on writing.
Please note: High School Readiness does not offer Orton Gillingham tutoring.
High School Readiness Courses:
An Introduction to High School Writing. This double period class integrates reading, writing, note-taking, outlining and web-based information gathering with study skills. Students will examine important study skills in the context of different writing styles. The focus in 2010 will be narrative writing. Students will study the six-trait writing process that will serve as their writing model. Other writing areas to be examined are: dialogue, characterization, and writing fluency.
Math. Depending on the grade and abilities of the students who enroll, the daily math class focuses on reviewing concepts covered on the Grade 8 MCAS tests and strengthening skills needed for 9th grade math.
Academic Readiness. This class focuses on the organizational strategies and academic skills necessary for success in high school. During the five-week course, the instructor will reinforce academic skills in reading comprehension, note-taking, and efficient time management. Students will gain an insight into their individual learning styles in order to better advocate for their needs in the classroom.
Afternoon Activities:
The afternoon activities are a blend of physically and mentally challenging units designed to help build self-confidence, self-reliance and good physical condition. Students participate in both outdoor, experiential Bounders activities and a studio arts program in the afternoons. There is a weekly field trip planned as part of each unit.
