Program Overview:

For children entering first and second grades in the fall, Beginning Readers offers a specialized reading program in the mornings followed by a variety of camp experiences in the afternoons. All students receive daily language instruction with teachers and tutors trained in the Orton-Gillingham approach. Our summer staff comes from Carroll School and a variety of greater Boston area colleges and schools.

Academic Overview:

Designed for children who have had or may have difficulty acquiring reading skills, this program offers language tutorials and small group classes. The self-contained classrooms offer academic structure for these early learners. The academic schedule in the mornings includes:

• Individualized 1:1 Language tutorials
• Small group (approximately 6 students) language class stressing phonemic awareness and oral expression
• Small group math class for review and strengthening of early math concepts
• Activity class focused on gross and fine motor skill development through movement and arts classes

Summertime Fun:

The camp program in the afternoon seeks to complement the morning academics by offering time for students to play, enjoy outdoor activities, and relax with friends. Carroll’s wooded campus and child-friendly facilities offer a variety of enticing summertime activities, including:

• Outdoor programs
• Games and sports
• Arts and crafts
• Water activities
• Field Trips
