A View into Multiple Intelligences Day
Have you ever wondered about how you are smart and talented? At Carroll, we dedicated a day filled with focused activities to learn about the different ways people demonstrate their abilities. Inspired by Howard Gardner’s theory about the ‘eight multiple intelligences,’ our students explored: Art Smart, Word Smart, Math Smart, Self-Smart, People Smart, Music Smart, Nature Smart, and Body Smart. Each grade experienced various ways to learn.
In the fourth grade, Guy Kern, the owner of Design Advantage, shared his experiences about being an adult with dyslexia. Guy spoke about how his different ‘smarts’ have helped him in life. For instance, he relies on his ‘Art Smarts’ to support himself as a portrait artist, his ‘People Smarts’ to make friends when he travels abroad and to help promote his successful design business. Guy even shared his ‘Music Smarts’ by playing the spoons for his young audience!
In addition to hearing Guy’s presentation, the 4th grade students experienced activities focused on: ‘Art Smart’ when tie-tying clothing; ‘ Word Smart’ exploring word searches and word games; ‘Math Smart’ creating glyphs using logic skills; ‘Self-Smart’ reflecting on and creating personal goals; ‘People Smart’ interpreting facial expressions and playing a teamwork game; ‘Music Smart’ making songs on the computer using GarageBand; ‘Nature Smart’ constructing fairy houses with items found in gardens and the woods; and ‘Body Smart’ testing their body awareness skills and playing physical games.
