Middle School Poetry Presentation

Middle School students gave stellar presentations to their peers and teachers during a Friday morning dedicated to poetry readings. The refrain in one 6th grade student’s poem included, “But I can’t write a poem, you see; There just isn’t one inside of me.” Bryan continued with great animation and with a confident presentation, to deliver a humorous and witty original poem written by his mother, Mrs. McNulty.

I Can’t

You’re not going to believe what I have to do
I have to write a poem for school
But I can’t write a poem you see
There’s just not one inside of me

Why don’t you let me do some Math
The numbers I can see their path
But I can’t write a poem you see
There’s just not one inside of me

Now Science that’s something I get into
Experiments are fun to do
But I can’t write a poem you see
There’s just not one inside of me

Now History that’s something you could sell
I think I can label a map quite well
But I can’t write a poem you see
There’s just not one inside of me

So I’ll sit and stare at this blank sheet
This homework’s really got me beat
Because I can’t write a poem you see
There’s just not one inside of me

This presentation was one of many accomplished poetry recitals that demonstrated the skills that our students develop in their language arts classes. Middle School students had the option to memorize a poem of their choice or write their own original poem. Their deliveries were focused, clearly articulated, and frequently very animated.

One original poem that evoked poignant feelings was, “My World”, written by Tonisha.

My World

My world is where rivers flow freely
where ponds are crystal clear
where frogs hop and birds sing
where crickets chirp and fireflies glow
where the grass sways in the wind
where buds bloom and flowers blossom
where oceans waves roar
where the Mountains stand tall in the distances
where no harm exists nor sickness or sadness reign
where only peace radiates
where Sun shines brightly in the day and the moon by night
where the stars glimmer in the darkness
I long for my world to be our world.

And, lastly, an award-winning original poem, Cars, written by Alex infused high spirits into the morning’s presentations.

Cars
Cars, Cars, O how I love cars,
Love to look at e’m like to go in side e’m
But I am not old enough to drive e’m.

Bentley, Lamborghini, Ferrari and so much more
But they only have 2 doors
Which is a coup, much too small for a group

BMW is on my radar because it’s a super nice car.
My mom used to have one, but when I was young
I ruined the seatbelt with my gum.

Someday I want to own a Porsche of my own.
With black tone on tone.
When my bank account has grown I soon will have one of my own.

Cars, Cars, O how much I love them.
As you can tell by the way I talk about them.
I hope I passed down the love to you everybody’s heart has a little vroom, vroom.
