Summer Speaker Series: CarrollMath

Carroll has redesigned our approach to teaching math to students who have language-based learning difficulties. We understand that many of the same issues that affect our students’ learning in language classes also have an impact on their learning math. Collaborating with Dr. David Stevens, a cognitive psychologist, Carroll’s math classes are redesigned to begin with cognitive warm ups that challenge our students’ thinking skills related to quantity, grouping, and sequence. Our math program emphasizes developing cognitive strengths in our students for problem solving, discovery of solutions, fluency with math facts, and developing consistency in math vocabulary and math comprehension. Software programs that develop both computational and conceptual skills are an integral part of this math program. The principles of our instruction follow the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics new Curriculum Focal Points.

Gayle Lewis, Math Department Head, has many suggested games for students to play on their own or with their family to reinforce math skills during the summer.
