 | | Oaxacan Wood Carvers Visit Carroll
In late May, the husband and wife artist team of Epifanio Fuentes and Laurencia Santiago visited from Oaxaca, Mexico. This event, put on by Carroll’s history department, was generously sponsored by Margaritas Restaurants’ Visiting Artist Series. The Series is an outreach program designed to share aspects of Mexican culture through their restaurants located throughout the New England area.
Students watched with rapt attention as Mr. Fuentes carved his creations out of a piece of wood using nothing more than a machete and some crude knives. Ms. Fuentes paints the carvings with bright acrylic paints and vivid color combinations. The results are stunning.
If you missed it, you can see Oaxacan woodcarvings or works by other Mexican artists in all Margaritas restaurants, as they consitute an essential part of each restaurant’s unique décor. Thank you to all parents, teachers and students who contributed to the penny drive, and to Margaritas!
