 | | Celebrating Chinese New Year
Carroll's 4th grade students studied Ancient and Modern China as part of their social studies lessons this winter. One morning they gathered to learn about being a 4th grade student in China and the Chinese New Year. A Lesley intern, Leslie Leland, made a video of her interview with Daisy, a Chinese exchange student staying with her family. The video allowed the students to learn about the differences between 4th grade in the U.S. and 4th grade in China. The students also compared and contrasted the similarities and differences between the American and Chinese New Year's celebrations and they used information from the video to create a Venn Diagram. Some of the facts that they learned are: The Chinese people celebrate New Year's gathered with their families, prepare great feasts with special delicacies, design banners to announce that Spring will be arriving soon, gather to listen to Chinese Opera, celebrate in the streets with the Lion Dance, the Dragon Dance, and Latern Festival, and set off special firecrackers.
The celebration continued with a delicious lunch prepared by Mrs. Strong-Allen with homemade Chinese noodles. What a treat!
