The "Breaking Through" Players recently performed the first show of the touring season at St. Ann’s Home and School in Methuen, Massachusetts.
At the heart of "Breaking Through" is a story about honoring differences and being brave enough to share one’s experiences with the world. Clearly that message touched those in the audience – students aged 9-16 and their teachers, therapists, and specialists. The mission of St. Ann’s is to support and educate children who have emotional and/or behavioral issues, and learning disabilities, through a residential and day program.
Proof of the impact of this show came from the following comments during the question and answer period after the show.
-
"The show wasn’t good, it was great."
- "Does dyslexia make your body hurt the way it makes your brain hurt when you are working hard to make sense of things?"
- "Do you get butterflies in your stomach before a test and before you go on stage?"
- "How come Emily was so angry? Do you feel that way sometimes, I do."
- "Wow, your play gives me courage to try new things."
- "I don’t have to be so afraid of myself now."
The audience laughed, wiped away a few tears, and congratulated the cast with T-shirts from their school. The cast members were inspired and proud that they had such a positive impact on this unique audience. The kids really did a great job and handled their parts like real pros!
