Kamishibai Storyteller Visits Beginning Readers and Second Graders
Yumi Izuyama visited the Beginning Readers and second graders at the end of May. She told folk tales from Russia and Japan using a Japanese form of storytelling called kamishibai. Kamishibai uses drawings set into a small stage to assist the storyteller and was popular in Japan before television. At that time kamishibai storytellers would go into neighborhoods and provide street entertainment for young children. In addition to presenting stories using her original artwork, Yumi also helped the children make origami mice, a project that they greatly enjoyed. The experience was a wonderful, new way for Carroll students to hear and see classic folk tales from other countries.
