5th Grade Bluebird House Project
The days are longer, the sun is brighter, and a few warmer afternoons are heralding the beginning of spring. The Bluebirds will be making their nests soon and the 5th grade students have worked busily throughout the winter to get ready for this new season.
Gate House students design and assemble Bluebird houses in woodshop gaining mathematical and woodworking skills simultaneously. The students develop small business skills learning manufacturing, including assembly line production, marketing, sales, and distribution as they produce Bluebird houses and sell them in the retail market. The students are selling their birdhouses to members of the Carroll community and in a few off-campus locations too. The proceeds from this project fund the 5th grade students’ overnight trip to Cape Cod in May and the students donate some of their proceeds to charities.
