Carroll School Participates in Research Study

We want to share some exciting news about our school’s participation in a new research collaboration!  This new project is based on the fact that we know dyslexia runs in families, in part due to the genes a child inherits.  The question is: Which genes are responsible?

Our school is committed to partnering with researchers to solve this puzzle. Banks of genetic material have been established for other developmental disorders (such as autism)—leading to important advances in researching those conditions. We have the opportunity to establish a similar bank for genetic research of dyslexia, which will be hosted by Yale University.

We hope that you and your child will consider participating in this opportunity to unlock a piece of the dyslexia puzzle. If you are interested, please contact the school nurse, who will (a) schedule and appointment with you and your child; (b) review how to give your consent to participate; and (c) provide details about donating saliva.

We look forward to seeing you!

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. My child is adopted and not genetically related to me, can we still participate?
    – Yes! All families are encouraged to participate- who knows what will help us crack the puzzle of dyslexia.

  2. My child is dyslexic, but I am not, can I still participate?
–Yes! Every member of the family, diagnosed dyslexic or not, is encouraged to participate. This can include siblings, parents, uncles, aunts, grandparents, cousins… anybody!

  3. Will there be any testing?
–No! There will be no additional testing for Carroll students. The “testing” mentioned in the consent form does not apply to our kids.

  4. Will there be a parent interview?
–No! The parent interview mentioned in the consent form also does not apply to our community.

  5. What should I do if I have any other questions?
–Email the project manager, Adria Karlsson, at akarlsson@carrollschool.org.
