F. Gorham Brigham, Jr.: Co-Founder of The Carroll School
In July 2009, Mr. Gorham Brigham was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award, at the 2009 CFO of the Year Awards, for his accomplishments in finance and his dedication to The Carroll School and the Treasurer's Club of Boston. During the awards ceremony, Michael Olivieri, publisher of the Boston Business Journal, announced that the Lifetime Achievement Award would now be referred to as the "F. Gorham Brigham Award".
F. Gorham Brigham, Jr., Dr. Edwin M. Cole, and Samuel L. Lowe were the three founders of The Carroll School. With their combined professional skills and dedication, they turned a vision into a reality. The founders recognized that there was a great need to establish a school for children who had dyslexia because bright children with dyslexia could not achieve success in traditional schools. Dr. Cole, an eminent neurologist, understood the challenges of dyslexia and Mr. Brigham, a leading businessman in the Boston community, and Mr. Lowe, a well-known antiques dealer who was very active on educational boards, purchased the "Carroll School" in Newton, established a governing Board of Trustees, and hired the first headmaster and teachers in 1967.
