Summer Speaker Series: Written Language
More than 40 parents of Summer@Carroll students attended the Summer Speaker Series "Written Language" presentation given by Allison West, Academic Director of the Summer@Carroll program and Language Arts Division Head of Carroll's Middle School.
Allison began her "Written Language" presentation reviewing the importance of educators and parents understanding the fundamental interconnection betwen a student's reading, speaking/listening, and writing skills. She answered many parent questions concerning topics like educational software, "non-reading" enrichment programs, executive functioning challenges with children who have language-based learning disabilities, and how much should parents read to their children at home. Allison also explored the ways in which direct, explicit multi-sensory instruction can be instrumental in helping students develop effective strategies and skills for improving their writing.
