Summer Speaker Series: Written Language

More than 40 parents of Summer@Carroll students attended the Summer Speaker Series "Written Language" presentation given by Allison West, Academic Director of the Summer@Carroll program and Language Arts Division Head of Carroll's Middle School.

Allison West Presenting the Summer Speaker Series on Written LanguageAllison began her "Written Language" presentation reviewing the importance of educators and parents understanding the fundamental interconnection betwen a student's reading, speaking/listening, and writing skills. She answered many parent questions concerning topics like educational software, "non-reading" enrichment programs, executive functioning challenges with children who have language-based learning disabilities, and how much should parents read to their children at home. Allison also explored the ways in which direct, explicit multi-sensory instruction can be instrumental in helping students develop effective strategies and skills for improving their writing.
