Designing Student-Advisor Relationships

As part of Opening Faculty Meetings, Linda Blanco, Head of Counseling at Carroll, led a workshop with middle school faculty regarding effective student-advisor reltionships. The middle school teachers developed a list of vital functions for advising: continuous check-ins, empathy for student, listening, ability to relate to students, availability, communicating with parents, advocacy, academics and personal goal setting, daily organization, one to one relationship with student and parent, and communication with student and parent that anticipates and prevents difficulties. The faculty see the advisor as a "walking, talking" collection of information about a student for the utilization of the student, parent, and other faculty members.
