5th Grade Students Step Up

On a clear night, following the last day of school, the 5th grade teachers, students and their families gathered for “Step Up Night”. The evenings’ activities included honoring a student with the Lower School Citizenship Award, recognizing the 5th grade students’ achievements and formally marking their transition from the Lower School to Carroll’s Middle School.

The Citizenship Award was given to a 5th grade student, Cathryn, who brings sensitivity, politeness, willingness to help others, and her positive approach into Carroll’s community each day. Following this presentation, each student read their own essay about participating in Gate House traditions including the Bird House project, the Cape Cod overnight trip, holiday festivities, and the reenactments of special events in history. The 5th grade teachers spoke to each child about his or her many accomplishments during the year.

At the close of this ceremony, the 5th grade students, carrying candles, ‘ascended’ to the Middle School where Larry Brown, Head of the Middle School, and Middle School faculty members greeted the students. Mr. Brown spoke about the new responsibilities and adventures that await the students and read messages, prepared by the 8th graders, giving advice to these newly anointed Middle School students about the journey ahead.
