NO CHILD LEFT UNORGANIZED
Carroll has a school-wide system to help students develop strategies for taking control of their academic responsibilities. We call it NCLU – for “No Child Left Unorganized.” At each grade level, students are taught skills to suit their developmental level. Students are expected to use organizational strategies in classrooms throughout the day; there is also time in the daily schedule that is specifically dedicated to building organizational skills. As students progress through the different grades, they are expected to develop increasing independence in using effective organizational strategies.
The backbone of NCLU is the binder system. The binder system is developed and enhanced as the students advance through the grades in the Lower School. In the Middle School, students are provided with laptops, which they use in conjunction with the binder. As they progress through Middle School, students become increasingly adept at using the laptop as an organizational tool, as the curriculum involves increasing laptop use.
All students begin each year with the same set of new school supplies and materials required for that grade level. Carroll supplies all initial classroom materials, including all required binders, writing implements, paper, tools such as protractors, and other academic materials the student may need to start the school year.
Students need to bring from home a sturdy, comfortable backpack large enough for a three-ring binder, books, and other school day related materials like lunch.
At home students need to plan a time for doing daily homework, as well as a good “study” space in which the student can do his/her best work to meet teachers’ expectations for homework quality and timeliness.
