MIDDLE SCHOOL MATHEMATICS
In the Middle School, the teachers use a variety of resources and texts to design strategies to meet the needs of their students. Computational skills are reviewed and reinforced as the students advance in their study of numbers, patterns and relationships, geometry, measurement and data analysis. Concepts are investigated with an emphasis on viewing relationships from a verbal, numeric, symbolic, and graphic perspective. The seventh grade and eighth grade, students are introduced to and work with TI-83 graphing calculators in class. Eighth grade students study the topics of Algebra I, as appropriate.
Topics covered in the Middle School include:
Properties/PlaceValue/Estimation Patterns and relationships Logic/Problem Solving Language of math Data analysis Measurement/Geometry Computation/Fractions/Decimals/Percentage Calculator operations Ratio/Percent/Scale Probability Exponents/Algebraic expressions/Unknowns Integers Graphing functions Communication of understanding
The math department integrates class projects with other subject areas. The enhancement of the school’s technology resources is ongoing. All students are taught how to use spreadsheets and graphs for data analysis. |
