MATHEMATICS OVERVIEW
The Mathematics Program at Carroll School follows teaching principles that are aligned with the Orton-Gillingham approach, recommendations of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Focal Points, Massachusetts Department of Education Curriculum Frameworks, and most importantly, the learning style of each child. Some of the same issues that make reading difficult can cause difficulties with math comprehension as well namely language, memory, processing, retrieval, speed, and fluency. Small classes enable teachers to recognize different learning styles and to utilize an individualized, structured, sequential, lively, and multi-sensory methodology to both challenge and support each student's understanding of the concepts presented.
The principles of Orton-Gillingham instruction are entwined with cognitive activities, the Symphony Math program and Singapore Math at all levels in the curriculum.
- a balance of explicit and explorative instruction,
- sequential instruction distributed across the level,
- continuous review of practice across the level,
- multisensory adaptations (manipulatives),
- and cumulative assessment distributed across the level.
