LOWER SCHOOL MATHEMATICS
In the Lower School the program is based on incremental development, permitting the assimilation of one facet of a concept before the next is introduced. This method, combined with continuous reinforcement of previous skills, allows students to become familiar with the topics presented and also to work on mastering skills. Genuine learning is demonstrated not only through understanding a concept but also through the student's ability to apply that understanding to new problem solving situations. Teachers enrich a topic area with either a cooperative class project or a hands-on lesson. Topic areas covered in the Lower School include:
Counting/One-to-one correspondence Graphing/Estimation/Number Sense/Place Value Calendar/Money/Time Geometry Language of math Probability Measurement - Standard and non-standard Exploring relationships/Patterning Fact Families Computation/Addition and subtraction with regrouping Multiplication and division with single and double digits Fraction/Decimal Concepts
