The Bounders Program is a unique and important part of The Carroll School experience. Bounders provide our students with a variety of safe and fun outdoor experiential adventure activities. These activities provide both physical and mental challenges in a non-competitive and friendly environment.

Adhering to the “challenge by choice” model, students are encouraged to take risks through a variety of sequenced group initiatives and challenge course activities that require cooperation, communication, trust, and active participation. Canoeing, rock climbing, map and compass, hiking, skiing, and backpacking are a few of the “off the beaten path” activities offered to our students.

The Bounders Program is staffed by experienced faculty. Our faculty has years of experience in a variety of outdoor pursuits, and they enhance their skills through nationally recognized organizations such as Outward Bound, Project Adventure, and the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS). In addition, each faculty member is trained in Wilderness First Aid.

The Bounders curriculum is designed to reflect the varying stages of student development. Care is taken to sequence activities so as to build upon previous skills learned, and individual and group development.

Beyond the daily classes, Bounders provides extended day, weekend, and summer outdoor enrichment activities for students.

A major component of the Bounders program is field trips. There is a specific "gear list" for students going on field trips.
