STORROW HOUSE HISTORIC ARTICLE

The Carroll School located a 100-year old magazine Indoors and Out (January 1906) with an article about the building of the original Storrow House. This article contains many original photos of the main building which now houses the Middle School and the “modern” stable, current home of the 5th grade.

One of the construction highlights was that the home was built as a “fireproof country house.” As the article points out, the construction of the external walls includes “a four-inch air space…enclosed between two thicknesses of eight-inch brick.” In addition, “the aversion of the mistress of the house to dust-catching devices was such that not a single sunk panel and scarcely any moldings are to be found within.”

Note that the back cover of the magazine contains another picture of the house, in an advertisement for “Dustless Sweeping for Modern Home,” also known as “The Vacuum Cleaner.” According to the ad, “in the modern house of James Jackson Storrow…the Vacuum Cleaner plant has been installed.” We can report that this system is not currently in use at Carroll!

Have fun comparing the article, architectural drawings, and pictures to our current building. Although a lot has changed in the last century, a lot remains the same!
