THE CARROLL SCHOOL AT A GLANCE

The Carroll School is designed specifically for children with language-based learning disabilities, such as dyslexia. The school enrolls 340 students in grades 1-9 and has over 140 faculty and staff members.

The Carroll School is located on two campuses in Lincoln and Waltham, Massachusetts, approximately 18 miles west of Boston, and has students from over 70 Greater Boston communities. Carroll teaches children to read, comprehend, and write through a structured, sequential, multi-sensory, systematic, alphabetic-phonetic approach to instruction. The principles of Orton-Gillingham are the foundation we use for teaching reading (decoding) and spelling (encoding) to our students.

In addition to language and literature, mathematics, science, and history classes, every student receives an additional language class that may be an Orton-Gillingham tutorial or a small group instruction that addresses Oral Reading Fluency, Writing and Revision, or Comprehension and Text Structure.

The maximum size for classes for grades 5 – 8 is eight students, while classes for younger students and additional language classes are often smaller. The educational curriculum is enriched with Physical Education, Movement, Performing Arts, Studio Art, Woodshop programs, and Bounders, a physically and mentally challenging outdoor, non-competitive program.

Beginning in the Fall of 2011, Carroll will provide a challenging and supportive 9th grade with a curriculum that mirrors that of local college preparatory schools. Performance expectations will be high while targeted support will be given in order to help students achieve these high standards. The Program will also provide direct and personal service in planning transition to high school.

The use of technology in the curriculum enhances Carroll’s multi-sensory approach to education by providing innovative, interactive methods in teaching in part through the use of SMART Boards and a variety of educational software and internet sites. The campuses are fully wireless, and the school owns over 450 computers for use by students and teachers. Students in Grades 6 - 9 are assigned individual laptop computers for use with their schoolwork. Grades 1 - 5 utilize computer labs equipped with desktop computers, as well as mobile laptop carts and Writers for classroom computer access.

Our School’s summer programs include Summer@Carroll, a five-week, full-day program for children from the ages of 6-14 that provides remedial reading, writing, and math classes in the mornings and camp-based activities in the afternoons; we also offer TED, a Technology Engineering and Design program, for children entering grades 4-7, where campers learn through fun, hands-on, collaborative technology and engineering projects.

The current tuition is $37,555 with approximately 17% of students receiving some form of need-based financial aid awarded by the School. Because of the remedial nature of our school, tuition and related expenses may be eligible for a medical tax deduction.

The Annual Fund accounts for 7% of the operating budget. The goal is over $600,000. Last year 100% of the Board of Trustees, over 65% of the parents, and many alumni generously contributed to the Annual Fund.

The Carroll School is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) and is a member of the Association of Independent Schools of New England (AISNE). The Massachusetts Department of Education has approved Carroll School as a private special education school program.
